Ebook About
"This book fills a tremendous void…" wrote E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., about the first edition of I AM NOT SICK, I Don't Need Help! Ten years later, it still does. Dr. Amador's research on poor insight was inspired by his attempts to help his brother Henry, who developed schizophrenia, accept treatment. Like tens of millions of others diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, Henry did not believe he was ill.In this latest edition, 6 new chapters have been added, new research on anosognosia (lack of insight) is presented and new advice, relying on lessons learned from thousands of LEAP seminar participants, is given to help readers quickly and effectively use Dr. Amador’s method for helping someone accept treatment.I AM NOT SICK, I Don't Need Help! is not just a reference for mental health practitioners or law enforcement professionals. It is a must-read guide for family members whose loved ones are battling mental illness. Read and learn as have hundreds of thousands of others…to LEAP-Listen, Empathize, Agree, and Partner-and help your patients and loved ones accept the treatment they need.

Book I Am Not Sick I Don't Need Help! How to Help Someone with Mental Illness Accept Treatment Review :

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for writing this book. Within hours of beginning to use the methods shared in this book, I was able to cultivate dramatic improvements in my relationship with my undiagnosed and untreated brother. We've been trying to get him help for almost a decade but have been completely unsuccessful. Over time, his delusions and paranoia have evolved past the government and now include family members, ex-girlfriends, roommates, etc. Throughout the years, I was one of the only people he would always trust. Eventually, as the disease progressed, he stopped trusting me too and wouldn't talk to me. It also doesn't help that I'm a nurse which has really played into some of his delusions. I finally convinced him to have dinner at my home to celebrate our dad's birthday a couple weeks ago and he accused me of poisoning him. My entire family has been devastated trying to get him help. The police are often called to his home by his roommates or the neighbors but so far he never qualifies for a 72-hour hold. He's been fired from every job. He's lost custody and any contact with his son. He's been homeless in the past and is currently facing homelessness again within the next week. He's beginning not to trust or talk to any of his family or friends. When we do finally make contact it erupts into him becoming explosively angry and it is terrifying for everyone involved. My entire family is at a loss and we're all struggling on burnout after years of stress on how to help my brother. We all fear for that call. We all fear losing contact with him completely if he becomes homeless again.I began reading the book last night. Today, my brother began texting me and sharing some delusions. When I tried to get him to talk about the delusion he didn't want to share more and it was clear he didn't trust me. I frantically grabbed the book, flipped through, and did my best to use the methods outlined in the book. Apologizing for my past behavior and offering to listen without giving advice worked! He began opening up to me again and went deeper into sharing. I then used reflective listening as best as I could and offered empathy and again, it worked. He felt heard. The conversation ended rather abruptly after that and I wasn't sure what to think of that but gave him space. A couple hours later he called me from the emergency room to say he'd been hit by a car as a pedestrian. Thankfully he's fine, just sore, with no broken bones. "You were the first person I thought to call," he said, which made me cry and also gave me an instant awareness of how pivotal it is to maintain a trusting relationship. Unfortunately, he was released by the ER before he called me. When I called the ER to explain the situation in hope of obtaining a 72 hour hold to stabilize him they wouldn't return my call (no surprise, hipaa). Regardles, this book has already proven to be invaluable in learning how to rebuild a relationship with my brother that will hopefully lead to a partnership that helps him stabilize and stay safe.Tonight, the interaction with my brother ended with him telling me he loved me and how much he appreciated my help and understanding. That alone, is worth the book. My greatest fear is losing my brother and having our last moments be of us fighting and him believing that his family does not love, care about, or understand him. This book has already allowed me to make sure that will never happen.
A technique that teaches you how to approach your child (adult) in a way that they will listen and have a conversation with you. Once at that point, you will see what to say to help them make the decision to their medicine. Some ideas are a little hard to accept at first, but keep reading and see if you suddenlyl have a change of mind. I had an 'ah ha' moment when I saw that trying to convince my son he had a mental illness was like talking to a brick wall - and WHY it is that way. I found I was the biggest obstacle in our way. Persons with brain disease live in a reality THEIR brain has created. Their right may be 'the sky is red not blue'. It is their reality, so do not argue with them - you are not going to change them. What would you do if everyone was telling you that the sky was red when you KNEW it was blue? Welcome to their world.
