Complete disclosure I've had a brief chat with the author on her wonderful blog, but I have not been compensated in any way for this review. First, as my headline suggests this book should be treasured for moving beyond the shores of England and Scotland in historical fiction of the 16th Century! While the Tudor Period is justifiably famous, there's a whole wide world out there rich with culture that needs to be mined for stories. Second, Ms. Morgan has wonderful prose, clear and crisp dialogue, and a depth of knowledge of her subject that captivates me as a reader.So why only four stars? I would have added half a star if Amazon's policy let me, but what stops this great book from being five stars for me is that there's an imbalance between internal reflections and the 'action' of the story. To put it simply, we're in the character's heads too much. The schemes and counter-schemes are thought through and talked through rather than put in true action. The stakes don't feel high enough because we're never surprised when the characters do act. We've already been through the entire thought process of each!We get to know every character through the thoughts of other characters, never by them just being and doing. Francis (who disappointed me as a bit too stupid) and every other secondary character are only presented as our main characters perceive them. This underwhelmed me because these Kings, Queens, and Nobility of history had huge complex personalities and contributed fairly little to the main plot itself.Therein lay the only true flaw of this book, it's lack of scope. Ms. Morgan took a situation so narrow that I'm left wondering, "what is the 'Importance of Pawns'?"This is a great start for any author and I hope to read many, many, many, more Chronicles of the House of Valois from Ms. Morgan. Hopefully they will come in hurry, because she's made me starving for more. The attention to historical detail was meticulous, but what I enjoyed most about this book was the character development of Claude of France. To protect her younger sister, this sweet and timid queen was forced to stand up to Louise de Savoy, a woman whose ambitions knew no bounds. This book focuses on Queen Claude's struggles to protect her sister's well-being as well as the reputation of her sister's governess, Michelle de Soubise. How wonderful and how rare to read about how Anne of Brittany's meek and mild eldest daughter stood up to a wolf. Well done, author Keira Morgan.
